While still practicing about an hour a day with my flat picking and seeing progress, for instance hanging on to the pick is no longer an issue.
But I wanted to ask if any finger pickers notice better sound and performance right after using hand cream? I enjoy better playing right after working in some Corn Huskers.
It probably shortens the wound string life but lately the lifespan on my classical strings are about two months.
Anyway, anyone notice this? anyone grease up on purpose?

Personally I try to avoid any kind of lotion or oil on my hands....especially my left. As I get older it seems it's harder and harder for me to build callus's so I try to avoid getting lotion or oil on my left hand. Even at work if I have to do any kind of mechanical work I wear thin latex gloves. Just my thoughts.

Rather than using hand lotion before picking, use Fast Fret on the strings occasionally.  It will clean them off and make them extremely "slick" and easy to do slides and easier to pick.  At least it works for me.  I don't use the Fast Fret but about once a week and always wipe down the strings after using it to be sure I don't have too much of the stuff on the strings.

I've used Fast Fret ever since high school (I'm a member of AARP now) and I swear by the stuff. One tin can last you many many years. I'm on my 2nd one as I lost my 1st one after a lot of moving around.

I prefer hand lotion than a cream except when I needed to apply for allergy. I want lotion with moisturizers.
