I'm curious about the techniques and chord progressions used by the backup guitarists in the old-time string bands that played on the Grand Ole Opry years ago, such as the Fruit Jar Drinkers, the Possum Hunters, the Gully Jumpers, and the Crook Brothers. Has anyone devoted time to exploring this topic?

There was a book at one time I think was called Old Time Guitar. I think the publisher was Oak Publications. The front cover was a Picture of Sam and Kirk McGee. The songs featured were mostly Sam McGee's guitar styles. I lost my copy several years ago through a loan that wasn't returned. The book also featured excellent tab for the songs. I don't know if is still available. I bought my copy in the Music Folk store in Old Orchard, MO.

I'very downloaded it from Google Books. There's another book with some old Opryland guys on the cover, Old--Time Country Backup Guitar Basics, or something like that, by Joseph We idling, but I'm not able to tell if these pickers are actually transcribed in the book or not.
