Hi, All!
I'm writing an article (for a class, not for publication) about the benefits of playing music as an adult, and am interested in what what you think. I'll be posting this on each of the Hangout pages, in order to reach players of all instruments, and will be done collecting responses on Friday, October 26 (although it may remain an active thread afterward).
Although I'm most interested in your responses to the questions listed below (even if you don't choose to answer them all), please feel welcome to share whatever you wish. In my article, I am intending to use the names of those who respond, although I will not do so if you say you'd rather I didn't. If you like, I can send you a copy of the article, or post it in this thread.
Naturally, I won't be able to include every response I receive (it's only a 1,000 word article), but I'm grateful to you for reading this now, and thankful for any help you're willing to provide.
Thanks!
Jeff
Questions
How old were you when you started learning to play an instrument?
If you started playing later in life, what kept you from starting earlier?
What is/are the main instrument(s) you currently play?
How long have you been playing your main instrument(s)?
Have you taken up a new instrument as an adult?
If so, which one(s), and why?
What are you doing to try to keep improving as a musician?
What would you tell someone who thinks they're too old to start learning an instrument?
How does playing music make your life better?
What is something you've experienced that wouldn't have happened if you weren't a musician?
What else do you think I should know?

Well ….. guitar started at 14 years old.. started mandolin at 40 and fiddle at 50. I play daily and am usually taking lessons on one instrument or another. As my social life revolves around going to jam sessions I'd say that makes my life better. I meet many new people and go new places regularly. You will never be to old to start playing as long as your memory continues to function. You may never be as good as you want to be but it can still be enjoyable.
For a question ….. Why didn't you start earlier...… R/

Thanks, Richard -- I was hoping you'd have time to respond! Good stuff - especially the "You may never be as good as you want to be . . . " part. Your question is a good one, too -- if I can, I'll edit my original post and add it in.
