From Tom Smith on 2/15/2011 2:58:48 PM

Do you guys consider clawhammer style a subset of fingerstyle?

Thanks, Tom

Well, in my opinion, you are not using a flat pick and using your fingers, so I would consider it a style of fingerpicking.

That makes sense to me. I was curious how tightly defined "Fingerstyle guitar" by fingerstyle guitarists.

Yes

Absolutely, it's all in the fingers so it must be fingerstyle.

Actually, I believe this is more like clawhammer guitar. Not Travis picking. More like clawhammer banjo. Similar to this link:

So many more rhythmic possibilities.

Stringnut, I agree that your clip showed true clawhammer guitar. I've also heard the "Carter's Scratch" called clawhammer by some players. It's not true clawhammer unless the nails hit the string on the downbeat and the thumb on the off beat. All clawhammer banjo players will know this.
I do think this should be included in the fingerstyle group.

What about this clip of Dom Flemmons Performing "My Little Lady" by Jimmie Rodgers? How would you catagorize the style? I like it, just not sure what its called.

At the beginning Dom seems to use the Lester Flatt style of picking a thumb note, then a thumb strum followed by an up stroke by the index finger in a bum-ditty rhythm. He later seems to be using a Carter scratch style. I think this is really a style of his own. It's not clawhammer, since he's not playing the downbeat with the back of his nail(s).

Well, I am a Clawhammer banjo player. The clawhammer guitar is the same stroke on six string guitar . It is not travis picking at all! here is a sample of the Claw guitar stroke. youtube.com/watch?v=TIPj2281hn...e=related

Well my friend Steve Baughman who wrote a Mel Bay book on Clawhammer guitar is a fingerstyle player. I guess its fingerstyle.
