Fmaj 7 Arpeggio

From delboy on 2/18/2011 12:37:06 AM

Along the same lines as yesterday's posts, here's a nice moveable Major 7th arpeggio, also starting on the 5th string. Here I've written it out in F:
____________________________8___
_______________________10_______
_______________9_10_____________
_______7_10____________________
_7__8___________________________
________________________________

How this links in with yesterday's post is that to a massive extent these two are interchangeable. Yesterday's Dmin lick will fit nicely over a Fmaj chord, and this F maj arpeggio will fit beautifully over a Dmin chord.

Look at the notes in Dmin7:  D F A C
Look at the notes in Fmaj7:   F A C E

Playing the D note over the Fmaj7 chord gives it the 6th - a very nice jazzy sound.

Playing the E note over the Dmin7 gives it the 9th sound - again, very jazzy.

So two interchangeable arpeggios/licks...but the massive benefit of using these arpeggios over the other chord is that you're far more likely to avoid the root (at least I am!). And using the root too much when playing off arpeggios is one of my weaknesses. So by using the Fmaj arp over a Dmin chord I'm finding myself landing on the F at the end of phrases far more often than D - and hence my lines sound a little more interesting.

I'll do a video to illustrate these points and post it in the group feed a little later.

I'd love to know if any of this is of any use, whether it's stuff you good folks already know, or whether I should keep going? Just try to make the Swing group worth people's time!

Kind regards,
Derek
