I posted a rough and ready instrumental on my music page:

http://www.flatpickerhangout.com/myhangout/music.asp?id=20091

to support a thread about writing instrumentals (not that I'm an expert or anything - but I thought I'd dive in!). Anyway, it's a swing-based thing with a lovely chord sequence, a standard chord sequence, but I thought I'd share the changes here just in case any one is interested. As ever, excuse me if I'm teaching you to suck eggs!

Often, in jazz, the sequence will be a mixture of Major and Minor chords, but here, to give it that happy fun feel I've kept it all to Major and Dominants. Also, I used the C7 shape wherever possible to really give it that swing.

|  G  |  E7 |  A7 / D7 / | G |

|  G  |  E7 |  A7  | D7 |

|  G  |  G7 |  C7  | C# dim |

|  G  |  E7 |  A7 / D7 / | G ||

Lead wise I'm just playing chord tones most of the time. I'm dropping in a Bb dim scale over the A7 in line 2 (a standard gypsy trick over a dominant 7 chord), a standard gypsy phrase over the first two bars of line 3, followed by a C major pentatonic and a C#dim scale; and then more chord tones to finish.

If anyone wants to come up with a Section B (or C) I'd be delighted!

Derek

Following a moment of inspiration whilst walking the dog (not a euphemism!) I realised Bb for a M8 would enable me to maintain the theme that I created in the first section A. The chords for the M8 are:

| Bb | Bb | D7 | D7 | G / C / | F |

I've tried to maintain the Western Swing feel to the melody, although to me there's also a hint of ragtime in this section.

Kind regards,
Derek
