I'm new to the forum. I have 2 Martin X Series, a 6 string and a 12 string. I have been told that I should keep the 12 string tuned to D to relieve pressure on the neck. I really don't like having them tuned different and a capo doesn't seem to work very well on a 12 string. What are your thoughts on this?

My 12-string is tuned a step low so that it sounds standard with the capo on the 2nd fret. The capo goes on the 2nd fret and stays there , coming off only for string changes.
I never move the capo for the reason you mentioned. The 12-string requires too much adjusting of the tuning when the capo is moved. I have a Paige that just stays there.
Thanks. Also, a capo doesn't seem to hold down the octave strings (12, 10, 8, 6) very well. I'm using a spring clamp style capo and it just doesn't hold the skinny strings down tightly. Maybe a different capo might help.
I pretty much solved the capo problem by using a screw-tension capo with a round bar. I put a fairly soft sleeve on it, made from hardware store tubing, and then cut four 1/16" pieces of heat shrink tubing to go around the sleeve where it catches the octave strings.
G7th has a new "Newport 12-string capo" with a notched sleeve that should produce the same results. I haven't tried it though . . . my friendly local music store did not have a supplier who carries it.
If you order one, make sure you get the current version. It's a fairly new version of the product, and the older version doesn't have the notched sleeve.
I like to tune a 12 string low. If you tune to standard, you will need a light enough set of strings to keep from turning the guitar into a pretzel. D'Addario EJ 36 or EJ 38 should be ok for standard tuning.
I tune to D and make up my own sets. Currently, I'm using 11/11 - 15.5/15.5 - 25/10 - 32/14 - 42/18 - 56/28, with nickel windings. I might try monel at some point. I should note that my 12 string is an older instrument with a neck that is solid as a rock, and a top that's a shade on the thick side [~0.130"].
