New HD-28

From Kallesandria on 2/26/2011 10:07:52 PM

Well, having just become the proud owner of a new Martin HD-28, I thought I'd join the group.  I just absolutely love this guitar.  The thing that impressed me the most was how long a fretted bass note would ring.  I just wasn't used to that!  It took me several days to get accustomed to the feel of the neck compared to my other guitar, but other than that, I just can't stop playing it.  I'm pretty much a beginner flatpicker, after playing fingerstyle for so many years, but the songs are coming along.  It sure helps to have a nice guitar to boost your playing time!

Nothing motivates one to play like a fine guitar! IMHO, the two finest guitars on the planet are the Martin D-28 and the HD-28. The resonance and sustain that the HD has is so pronounced that it can actually cause problems playing. You have to actually mute notes more often because of that sustain. That's a good thing! Play it daily. In a couple of years, it will begin to open up and mature.

BTW, you will find that the HD-28's character makes it quite suited to finger picking too, much more so than the D-28. If you want to accentuate the guitar's complexity toward a finger style, try some phosphor bronze strings (always medium gauge, hehe.) on it.

Thanks for the nice suggestions! The funny thing is, I have not fingerpicked a song since buying it. As a matter of fact, I haven't even done that since New Years when I began to learn this flatpicking style. I'm probably in danger of losing some of my fingerstyle chops, but oh well....flatpicking bluegrass is just way too much fun! LOL

Kallesandria,
Where'd you go? I tried sending you an email but it got returned. I am guessing the same old thing happened again. You have my email so tell me if you'd like. Thanks Steve
