So I have been playing guitar for a while now, and when I first picked it up I was the best in my class and the fastest learner, but I never really practiced. It all came kinda natural to me so I felt like I didn't need to try so hard. Boy was I wrong. Eventually people caught up to me to the point that I was falling behind! I just didn't see how bad it was. I wanted to take up banjo a couple of years ago and did the same thing. It didn't take me long to learn lessons from my book and people were already saying that I was really good. Then last year when I went to a bluegrass camp in Texas it hit me. There were people my age playing like nobody's business, and they were really good. They were way beyond my skill level, and they could pick things up right away and play with strangers from all hours of the night and they sounded like they have been playing together for years. They were very talented, but it didn't happen over night. People told me I needed to practice, but now I have something that I didn't have before. The drive to become a better musician. I just wish I figured it out sooner.
