Although I've played guitar since about 1962, I'm not much of a flatpicker, but really enjoy those who have that talent. I am an Arizona Scruggs-style banjo picker, who plays by ear (tab just confuses me!). Therefore, MURPHY HENRY IS MY HERO! When it comes to playing backup, I firmly believe less is more. When it comes to playing lead, I believe the melody should be recognizable (too many notes just clutters up the tune). ...and no, I don't plant my ring finger...I let it flail about. **** I often m.c. bluegrass festivals around Arizona, including the Benson Bluegrass Festival (May), the Arizona State Fiddle Championships in Payson (Sept.), the Tucson Bluegrass Festival (Oct.), the Four Corner States Bluegrass Festival in Wickenburg (Nov.) and sometimes the White Mtn. Bluegrass Festival in Pinetop (Aug.). **** When I'm not playing banjo, I can be found either working on or flying my airplane (a Piper Arrow), free-lancing as a flight instructor, functioning as a semi-professional airport bum, and free-lancing as a casino consultant, teaching casino personnel how to catch card cheats. (I demonstrate card cheating methods and how to recognize cheating.)
