picker until I die:

Saturday, February 14, 2009

Hey ya'll, good to have another fine website like Banjo hangout for lovers of acoustic guitars. I play guitar along with mandolin {my main instrument}, and banjo. I live in the northwestern foothills of North Carolina, a place that produces many fine pickers famous and not so famous. I'd like to get to know the folks here and talk about good guitars. At present I have a Blueridge BR-140 that I got about 5 years ago. There is nothing about this guitar that I dislike. Only changes I've made is bone pins, and a new bone bridge I made myself. This guitar sounds much like a D-18 Martin. I will be getting back my dad's old 1966 D-35 this year, but I'm going to have it worked on. The things I'm thinking about having done to it is; New pick gaurd installed, neck reset, opening up the sound hole like Clarence White's old Martin, and scalloping the braces. I think this along with the age and tonewoods of this guitar will make it a boomer. Hope to make many friends here.

Started playing guitar at age 10, picked up banjo and mandolin within two years after that. Love good acoustic music be it Bluegrass, Old Tyme, Scotch Irish, as long as it is picked well all of it is good. Have written several songs/tunes, some of which have been recorded in the past and recently. Have a very good home recorder that I work up my stuff on for demos. Play in a church praise band and am working on getting up a group out of that band to play Gospel, and contemporary songs that I've written. Love to play, pick some everyday , practicing or recording. Not as fast as I used to be, but still learning. I love the challenge of learning new stuff in music. Can't read music, only play by ear. Have a Blueridge Br-140 guitar, a Morgan Monroe banjo that has a lot of non factory pieces on it and it's a pretty good banjo, and a Gibson A-9 mandolin. Will be getting a F-9 also within the next couple months. Soon I will hae my dad's old D-35 Martin back, I had to sell a few years back to help my son out of a vehicle jam. Guy I sold it to is a good friend , who is letting me have it back for the same price. It's a 1966 model. Going to need some work done on it which I hope to get done by the end of the year. I did pick for a living from the time I was 17 up until I turned 22. Am happily married now for 31 years, with two great sons.
